Mercedes Vario 612D Motorhome Race Van Project
Registered as a Motor Caravan. Taxation class is private HGV. Current mileage is 319,761KM – 198,690 miles. Mileage at last MOT was 317,267KM – 197,140 miles so it has only done 1,550 miles since July 2019. The original engine was replaced by the previous owner in 2018/19 with a low mileage unit, I have no proof this but she runs and starts fine. I spent two months at the start of lockdown last year ripping out the interior and making good the repairs and started to fit it out, as my original plan was to live and travel in it! However I have not stopped working since June last year and I’m still busy this year and I just don’t have the time to finish it in the foreseeable future, so this will be a good project for someone with the time to fit it out to their liking. Mechanically she runs, stops, steers etc fine. There is no limiter on the engine and she was quite happy cruising down the A3 at 70mph when I picked her up. This is the 2874cc Mercedes engine and gearbox found in the Sprinters of the same era, no complicated engine electricals etc. Body wise it is a steel cab with an aluminium box chassis, plastic sides and fibreglass roof. So none of the rot to worry about like the all steel Vario’s and Bus conversions etc. The bottom of the passenger door has rotted out, but the arches and sills are solid, the lower windscreen scuttle panel is also rotting. The grey you see on the cab and black lower passenger side and bumper is Raptor paint. It will need doing though, as you can see from the unpainted parts it’s tired and marked. I have relined the cab roof and fitted a new stereo and dash cam and four reversing cameras with a monitor for these on the drivers sun visor. There are two bigger sprinter visors included, these will need to be fitted and the headlining finished. No fancy electrics in the cab, it’s manual window winders and manual locking. I blocked off the walkway through to the rear, but this can be changed back if you prefer as the passenger seat swivels 180 degrees to face the rear. In the rear after I stripped out all the rotten stuff. The floor is aluminium plate with a central buffalo board. On top of this is 25mm insulation board and 9mm ply, the bedroom has 50mm of floor insulation. The roof was repaired and relined inside and out, all the roof windows were resealed etc and new wooden ceiling supports were installed. The roof has 50-75mm of closed cell spray foam with 25mm insulation board, the walls have 25mm of closed cell spray foam and 25mm of insulation board. The difference in temperature is between 10-15 degrees cooler/warmer than the exterior temp! All the side windows are weather tight and all have integrated sliding fly and sun screens, there are three roof windows, a small one in the bathroom which will need a new fly screen. The largest roof is I think 70 x 50cm and slides completely open, this only has a concertina blind which will need replacing, and the window above the bed area also has a blind and no fly screen. The previous owner used the rear as a garage with bed above, so the bonus now is a huge safari hatch in the bedroom. Along the drivers side is an exterior shower panel, but this needs to be renewed/fitted the same with the battery box and hook up will need connecting if you want to go down this route. There is also a cap for an internal water tank fitted. There is a baffled water tank under the rear overhang, this was used to connected a jetwash to clean racebikes by the previous owner, and is at least 200litres. On the passenger side is a electric door, which works and locks but I was in the process of relocating the wiring for the control panel, so this will need to be finished. Next to the door is a gas locker, the old external exit point of the toilet and cooker have been patched over, these will need finishing. The back door is where I planned to locate the control panels and fillers etc. There is steel locker on the back, good for bbq storage or whatever, spare wheel and vice for those odd jobs. A Fiamma F45i awning unwinds and closes, but I have managed to snap the plastic of the rear support bar whilst taking pictures today! It is also missing a cover from the front. The control panel and battery setup you see was just temporary, so I could test the lights and fan above the cab etc. That’s about it, I do have some odds n sods to include with the sale, some wind deflectors for the driver and passenger windows and other bits. I’m sure I have forgotten lots of things about it, so feel free to ask questions measurements, pictures, videos etc. I’m 6’3 and I just about touch the ceiling with my shoes on, bearing that in mind it will still need a ply ceiling and flooring.
